Introduction to Short Passing
Short passing is one of the fundamental techniques in football, essential for maintaining possession, building up play, and creating goal-scoring opportunities. A well-executed short pass not only demonstrates technical ability but also fosters teamwork and fluidity on the pitch. Mastering this skill requires a combination of precision, timing, and an understanding of body mechanics.
Developing proficiency in short passing enables players to make quick decisions under pressure, connect effectively with teammates, and adapt to various game scenarios. This guide outlines key coaching points that focus on the technical aspects of short passing, ensuring players can execute this skill with consistency and confidence.
Coaching Points for Short Passing
Focus and Awareness
- Look at the ball, the target, and then back at the ball to maintain focus on accuracy and execution
Non-Kicking Foot Placement
- Place the non-kicking foot level and alongside the ball for balance and control
Kicking Foot Technique
- Turn the kicking foot outwards and keep the ankle firm to ensure a clean and controlled strike
- Strike the ball with the inside of the foot, targeting approximately halfway up the ball to achieve the desired elevation and distance
Follow Through
- Ensure the kicking motion is smooth and follows through towards the target, helping to guide the ball in the intended direction
Using the Outside of the Foot
- For passes with the outside of the foot, position the non-kicking foot slightly further away from the ball
- Keep the ankle of the kicking foot firm to maintain control and achieve the correct ball spin
Body Position
- Maintain an upright body posture
- Keep the knee and head over the ball to ensure balance and prevent the ball from lifting unnecessarily
Additional Considerations
Body Positioning
- Maintain a low center of gravity with knees slightly bent to enhance balance and control during the pass
Communication
- Use verbal cues or hand signals to indicate your passing intentions to teammates, ensuring better coordination
Practice Drills
- Engage in one-touch passing exercises to improve reaction time and passing accuracy under pressure
These points provide a solid foundation for mastering short passing. Incorporating drills that emphasise accuracy, timing, and decision-making can help players integrate these technical aspects into match scenarios.
