Introduction to Lofted Passing
Lofted passing is a key technique for distributing the ball over greater distances while bypassing opponents. Whether switching play, finding a teammate in space, or delivering a cross, the lofted pass demands a combination of precision, power, and control. This skill is particularly useful for breaking defensive lines and creating attacking opportunities.
By mastering the lofted pass, players can vary their gameplay and make themselves more versatile on the pitch. Below are the core coaching points for executing a lofted pass effectively.
Coaching Points for Lofted Passing
Focus and Awareness
- Look at the ball, the target, and then back at the ball to maintain focus on execution
Approach to the Ball
- The approach can be straight or slightly angled depending on the player’s preference and the situation
Non-Kicking Foot Placement
- Position the non-kicking foot to the side and slightly behind the ball for stability and balance
Kicking Foot Technique
- Strike the ball with the top part of the foot (instep or laces)
- Aim to strike through the middle and bottom part of the ball to generate height and distance
Follow Through
- Follow through with the kicking leg to guide the ball accurately towards the target
Body Position
- Maintain a fairly upright body posture with the head steady
- Avoid leaning back unnecessarily, as this can compromise accuracy and control
Additional Considerations
Backspin Application
- Applying backspin can help the ball drop more quickly and be easier for your teammate to control
Situational Awareness
- Use lofted passes to switch play across the field, exploiting open spaces and changing the attack’s direction
Practice Drills
- Incorporate drills that involve lofted passes over defensive setups to simulate game scenarios
These coaching points will help players refine their lofted passing technique, enabling them to contribute more effectively to their team’s tactical play.
