Session Focus
Using Disguise to Beat Opponents 1v1
This week is all about helping players recognise and use disguise to beat an opponent 1v1. The goal isn’t just about learning a flashy skill move — it’s about why and when to use it.
We’re encouraging players to look up, identify pressure, and shift their body or the ball to unbalance the defender. This session sets the foundation for players to beat opponents on the dribble with intention, not instinct.
For 1–6s, we want players exploring simple cuts and changes of direction. For 7–11s, we build in pressure and decision-making to drive execution.
Structure & Flow of Session
1. Ball Mastery Warm-Up (10 mins)
Age 1-6: Basic cuts and changes of direction with fun themes Age 7-11: More complex feint patterns with increased tempo
2. Contextual Game Scenario (15 mins)
Age 1-6: Simple 1v1 games encouraging disguise Age 7-11: 1v1 exercises with defender pressure and decision-making
3. Small Sided Game (15 mins)
Age 1-6: Fun games encouraging dribbling with feints Age 7-11: Conditioned games rewarding successful disguises
4. Match-Related Play (15–20 mins)
Age 1-6: Free play with minimal rules Age 7-11: Small-sided matches with 1v1 focus
Why This Structure Works
- Builds confidence through repetition, then layers in pressure
- Helps players identify space and use feints with purpose
- Encourages decisions in realistic, directional game scenarios
- Repeated exposure to 1v1 situations helps create players who can change games in the final third
