Session Focus
Awareness: Recognising Space and Scanning Early
This week, we shift the focus from technique to awareness.
Dribbling is more than just ball control — it’s about recognising space, scanning early, and making better decisions before the touch. For players to progress, they must learn to see, not just execute.
We’ll encourage head-up play, problem-solving, and recognising space or pressure before making their move.
Structure & Flow of Session
1. Ball Mastery Warm-Up (10 mins)
Age 1-6: Basic dribbling with head-up awareness games Age 7-11: More complex dribbling with scanning challenges
2. Contextual Game Scenario (15 mins)
Age 1-6: Simple games encouraging looking up Age 7-11: Dribbling exercises with decision-making based on pressure
3. Small Sided Game (15 mins)
Age 1-6: Fun games encouraging awareness Age 7-11: Conditioned games rewarding scanning and space recognition
4. Match-Related Play (15–20 mins)
Age 1-6: Free play with minimal rules Age 7-11: Small-sided matches with awareness focus
Why This Structure Works
- Teaches players to link technique with perception
- Builds dribblers who think before they act
- Encourages players to explore space, not just avoid pressure
- Supports confidence when looking up — even under chaos
