Session Focus
Speed With Ball & Direction Changes on the Move
This week is all about dribbling with purpose and pace. We’re helping players understand how to:
- Accelerate with the ball
- Change direction without losing control
- Make decisions at speed
At this stage of development, it’s important that players experience moving with the ball, not just touching it slowly in drills. We want them to understand that dribbling isn’t only about close control — it’s also about breaking lines, attacking space, and changing tempo.
Structure & Flow of Session
1. Ball Mastery Warm-Up (10 mins)
Age 1-6: Basic dribbling with speed changes Age 7-11: More complex dribbling with acceleration and direction changes
2. Contextual Game Scenario (15 mins)
Age 1-6: Simple games encouraging speed with the ball Age 7-11: Dribbling exercises with tempo changes and decision-making
3. Small Sided Game (15 mins)
Age 1-6: Fun games encouraging dribbling into space Age 7-11: Conditioned games rewarding speed and control balance
4. Match-Related Play (15–20 mins)
Age 1-6: Free play with minimal rules Age 7-11: Small-sided matches with dribbling at pace focus
Why This Structure Works
- Encourages dribbling into space, not just around cones
- Supports the balance between close control and speed
- Helps players learn when to accelerate and when to turn
- Prepares players for real game moments where speed and control combine
