Coach In Context - Moment, Slice, Situation

Every session connects directly to the game. That’s non-negotiable. Whether we’re working on defending, building up, or finishing, everything is anchored in context.

Moment - What part of the game are we in?

This is the starting point. Are we attacking, defending, or in transition? Knowing the moment shapes everything, from behaviours to session constraints. It defines what you’re coaching & why it matters right now.

Slice - Where on the pitch is the action?

We split the pitch into thirds (Defensive, Middle, Final), and every concept we coach happens somewhere. Pressing in the final third? That’s not the same as pressing in the middle. The slice sets the scene and brings clarity to the learning picture.

Situation - What’s the player facing?

This is the real-world layer: pressure, overloads, combinations, or recovery. The situation adds detail. It teaches players how to read the game, and not just play it. This is how we help them make better decisions faster. These are our principles.

Why It Matters

Too often, coaches teach exercises in isolation. But football isn’t played in isolation. The Moment-Slice-Situation model gives players context, and that’s where transfer lives. When they see a picture, understand its meaning, and rehearse it often — that’s when learning sticks.

Every principle in the Phases and Principles map, from “Breaking Lines” to “Winning Duels”, is matched to a moment, a slice, and a situation.

For example:

Coaching Cues

These aren’t just labels. They’re coaching cues. They shape your:

And most importantly, they help players see the game more clearly.
