Jamie Birch🔥 • 3d@Brian Willis 👍🏻 so if someone said, “what does a Brian Willis” team look like, it would be defensively solid? I think I lean this way as well to be honest. It’s the thing I find easiest to coach0Reply

Brian Willis • 3d@Jamie Birch I don’t know if they would say that, but it’s where I start with every team. With my boys the aim was to get them to “good enough” on defense before we moved on to working on other things. Then revisit and refine defensive principles periodically and I think we got to a point where were more consistent than solid.0Reply

Brian Willis • 3d@Jamie Birch I’ve been enjoying your coaching questions posts. Having to give these things some thought and reading other’s answers has been helpful. Just don’t forget to add your vote/input.1Reply

Jamie Birch🔥 • 3dI’ve gone for solid defensively as that’s what I concentrate on first. I like to be direct and fast in the counter as well.1Reply

Brian Willis • 2d@Jamie Birch My boys are good on the counter. More so because that’s how they are naturally than anything I’ve done.1Reply

Ross Whitehead🔥 • 2dI’m torn between “counter-attacking transitions” and “defensive solidity and discipline”.Our team is set-up to be hard to score against and we try to get the ball forward quickly to break the offside trap.2Reply

Steve Miles • 2dIt appears I very much have a coaching identity. A couple of weeks ago a supporter said “you can tell Steve coaches this lot” because we dominated possession and territory. Along with things like wall pass and third man movements to break lines and defensive formations I like my teams to have patience when on the ball and be in a position to win it back quickly when we lose it. Build pressure and create mistakes3Reply

Ross Whitehead🔥 • 2d@Steve Miles I would love us to get to the stage that we can dominate possession. The ball is generally treated like a hot potato at the moment. We get the occasional good passing move, but it is the exception rather than the rule with our group.2Reply

Steve Miles • 2d@Ross Whitehead it’s not a quick process but it is worthwhile when you see what you practice begin to emerge on a game day. I believe that It is one of the most satisfying things ever2Reply

Kevin Middleton⭐🔥 • 2d (edited)Having been involved at every level, for me, the game up to a certain level is just multi transitions so master them, then you will win most matches.Pre transition phases are under coached and vital to doing this (as well as your transition principles). So I voted for this one ⚽4Reply

Ross Whitehead🔥 • 2d@Kevin Middleton Great advice Kevin. What would your top 5 drills for this be?1Reply

Kevin Middleton⭐🔥 • 2d@Ross Whitehead I won’t give the drills (yet), but I might do a cheatsheet on this….But my top 5 principles would be:
- In attacking transition, if you are not facing forward on the turnover, you must find someone who is facing forward
- The first or second pass in transition must go forward. If you can’t find feet, find the channel or space in behind
- In defensive transition, we must get pressure on the ball within 3-5 seconds. It is much easier to work hard for 15 seconds across 20-30 metres, than… See more
