Jamie Birch🔥 • Sep 26@Stephen Kavanagh amazing principles to work to. Can you elaborate on the “Fair” principle, what would an example of that be?1Reply

This has helped the team’s mentality too - no star players, we are all in it together, we are only as good as the weakest link so lift them up etc. It did mean sacrificing wins for development A LOT. It meant the best kids we ever had come to training didn’t stay because they weren’t guaranteed game time. It has meant we’ve lost kids who want to play in a higher division or more results bas… See more3Reply

And we’ve been consistent with it so parents know the score from day 1 and see it every session/match in action.3Reply

Jamie Birch🔥 • Sep 26Was that something you had to bring the parents on the journey with as well, how did you approach that? Not being so results focused will pay the players back in the future 100%.Really like that approach, a lot of input can be from the coaches to the players, and it can be a tell. Giving the players a voice is amazing.1Reply

We’ve always had a start of season chat with parents, we ran the workshop d presentation, we send regular updates via our intranet, we are transparent about what we do, we have continually pushed the messages. It has been hard but worthwhile for the kids.2Reply

Stephen Kavanagh • Sep 26@Ross Whitehead I’ve turned myself inside out over the differences in development at any point in time. So we have tried to ensure particular combinations that work, particular complimentary attributes so if we have Kid A on we can’t have Kid D on the same side of the pitch. We used to break them up - theoretically between ourselves - into 3 groups and try to get a mix of groups on the pitch. There is a challenge for the more developed kids to do a bit more and be standout when there is a less d… See more3Reply

Ross Whitehead🔥 • Sep 26@Stephen Kavanagh Development isn’t linear and all the kids are individual and will develop at different rates. Being able to remember that while trying to develop a team and get them up through all the various formats is a real challenge.I like your idea of grouping kids together and that certain combinations shouldn’t be on together - that must make substitutions and even game time a real nightmare!2Reply

Stephen Kavanagh • Sep 26@Ross Whitehead Yep, we had to grit our teeth a lot. It wasn’t easy and there were times where I wondered if we were getting it right - was everyone really benefiting? In hindsight, yes not just football wise but also as people. We had a lot of difficult conversations with parents who didn’t like it and hard days where we’d let in 8 goals. I’m loving now being able to coach more and do the detail and tactics.3Reply
