It’s also a short season and so there isn’t much practice time from here on out as we will have two games a week until about mid November.I’m trying to instill three main principles and then go from there. The kids seem to have a grasp of how we want to play now and they are getting better. We have only played three games so far. We are able to create chances and get the ball downfield but struggle to put the chances away.1Reply

Sean Ancheta • Oct 27Principle #1 Can we outplay as many opponents as possible. Outplaying an opponent = dribbling past opponents or passing the ball upfield to feet and leaving as many opponents behind.Principle #2 If we can’t outplay an opponent, then drop the ball to then outplay an opponent.Principle #3 Get the ball back as quickly as possible after losing it.2Reply

Ross Whitehead🔥 • Oct 27The past two or three weeks we have had a finishing drill as part of our training. The kids are lined-up in three columns:Player in Column 1 is 1v1 against the keeper, must shoot from outside the line. Once they score/miss, the player from Column 2 goes. The player from column 1 becomes the defender and it’s a 1v1 and the attacker can shoot from anywhere. Once they score/miss, the player from Column 3 links with player from Column 2 for a 2v1 against the defender. We play offside in this, so the… See more2Reply

Ross Whitehead🔥 • Oct 27@Sean Ancheta We try to keep it fast so it’s at match speed, but also so the kids in the lines aren’t standing around too long.We have also noticed the natural defenders and the ones that are maybe more attacking minded (some haven’t grasped the “delay” concept of defending yet). It also helps decision making at a certain extent. The kids seem to enjoy the drill, but we’ve not seen a massive up tick in goals in our games so far.2Reply

Jamie Birch🔥 • Oct 27When i do finishing i try to do it in a split session sense, so one unit might be working on passing patterns or box rondo work for example while the other unit is doing finishing with another coach. That means less ques and less wait time between reps for the players.4Reply

Ross Whitehead🔥 • Oct 27@Jamie Birch We’ve been doing that too depending on numbers. If numbers are good then we split the group. For the last session we had enough to use 8 (2 GKs and 6 lined-up) in the finishing drill and then 2 more did 1v1s. We’d swap the 2 doings 1v1s every couple of minutes, but we’ve also done rondos too.The finishing drill above can get a bit messy as players should retrieve their own balls.3Reply

Brian Willis • Oct 27@Jamie Birch A split session like this has been a goal of mine all season, but engagement wanes with the group I’m not focusing on as much and that’s been holding me back from doing it.2Reply

Ross Whitehead🔥 • Oct 27 (edited)We also run a different finishing drill when numbers are really low:2 players line up in front of goal, the rest are on the byline with a ball each. The player on the byline passes to the attacker and instantly presses them hard for a 1v1. After a goal/miss, the defender joins the attackers line and the attacker joins the defenders. We have 2 GKs, so they rotate after each attempt.4Reply

Brian Willis • Oct 27@Ross Whitehead it’s amazing sometimes how much missing just a couple kids can change a session plan. Prevents you from doing some things while making it easier to do others. I’ll have a few things in my back pocket going forward that are low turn out specific that we couldn’t work on otherwise. I’ve been taking a more generic approach to this and scaled down my existing plan, rather than maximizing the opportunity to work on something more specific.3Reply
