Chris Unruh • Jul 21That’s the exact age I coach and hands down our most fun fitness related sessions has been doing shoulder to shoulder sprints but done as a tournament style bracket. So I set up 4 grids. They’re V’s out of cones that point to the net which are about 10 yards in length. Two kids start at the line even with the tip, do a 3/4 run to the wide cone and then turn into the V which acts as a funnel. Chris Unruh • Jul 21In general at this age I just really focus on when I have active drills how much of a rest am I giving them. Small sided games can be exhausting for them and gives them really good game shape type running. So we definitely incorporate a lot of 2v2 & 3v3 games, get the intensity up and switch. I’d rather they do 10 high intensity 2 minute rounds of a small sided game with 2 minutes in between (4 groups of 3 for a team of 12) than just a 75% effort 6v6 scrimmage. Never mind the benefits of getting touches and being involved in the play with those numbers.4Reply

Chris Unruh • Jul 21If we do any basic running it will be varying stances at startup. So backpedal for 5 yards open up and run. Or start at push up position, side on stance etc. Instead of just straight line runs it’ll be a run to a cone then a cut towards net. I do t use the ball every instance but it’s nice to add it in when it makes sense as you try to replicate game moments.3Reply

Stephen Kavanagh • Jul 21Old fashioned relays work well, you can design almost anything like you have with your ideas. I haven’t used if for a while, but we used to do a Horst Wein activity over the summer where you have 3 kids in a square (runners) and 3 kids outside it (taggers). The aim of the game is to tag the other team as quickly as you can and then see which team can do it the fastest. The taggers can only enter 1 at a time to tag. Chris Unruh • Jul 22Here’s another unprofessionally drawn favorite at this level. Some boys were starting to get afraid of 50/50s and we use this to focus on getting a ton of reps in at that prior to a 1v1 battle. On whistle run around your net and then attack the ball. This is a fun knockout style bracket one too to bring up the competition level.3Reply
