Jess Knox • 29dThis is an amazing question and I will take a hack at this. Admittedly, I’ve messed this up a bunch of times with trying to do too much as well as not managing myself. Here’s what I would like to do:First, I would break my five mins into two parts: two minutes of teaching and three mins of motivation. Second, in my teaching two mins, I would keep it super simple as to not overwhelm the working memory. Call backs to things they already know. Maybe one principle.I would open up with a deep breath … See more3Reply

I’d also tell them to keep their chins up and that we may have lost the game, but we’re not going to lose the 2nd half - work hard for each other and we can have a half to be proud of.3Reply

Trevor Charlie • 29d@Jamie Birch I like this answer mate. Old school hair dryer stuff! Hard work and effort require zero talent. You can be the most gifted set of player but if you can’t do the minimum requirements an average player who IS prepared to do the basics will run rings round you and look miles better than you’re capable of.I do struggle though because some young lads just don’t know how to take it and if confidence is already fragile. Does it do more harm than good? I guess there is a way of doing it. I know once I start I can end up going full Fergie!1Reply

Jamie Birch🔥 • 28d@Trevor Charlie it doesn’t have to be hairdryer, you can express disappointment in plenty of tones. I think actually the message delivered in a low tone so they have to lean into listen to you have more impact. And you can move it away from a telling off into an appeal to their pride. But lots of ways to deliver a message1Reply

Sean Ancheta • 29dI had a scenario a couple of years ago like this. It was our first game of the season. We found ourselves in a 5-0 hole at halftime. The opponents had two good players. A midfielder who just sent balls up to their striker. All other players on their team were just taking up space. My halftime talk consisted of convincing my players that we were actually the better team. I gave the adjustments needed. I told them they beat us 5-0 the first game (half). Now we had another game (half) to play.Long s… See more3Reply

Sean Ancheta • 29dWithout getting too philosophical I would condense my previous comment to “The scoreboard doesn’t always tell the truth.”So let’s not fixate on numbers. Lets focus on things we can control like many have stated previously.2Reply

Trevor Charlie • 29dSome fantastic feedback all. Thank you.You may not be surprised to learn that this was me on Saturday. I found it hard to settle one thing as there was a lot to process. In the end I chose to lean into my emotion and gave a bit of telling off. Which with hindsight did give a bit of shot in the arm but I know was the least helpful of all things I could have done. These answers have given me a lot more to lean into and I think faced with another situation like this I’ll be using a blend of remember… See more3Reply
