I would suggest running the “master the opponent” block of sessions which is for 7-12 year olds, and then probably move onto the “master the game” block which is for 12-18 year olds. That tells you what exercises to run by week to develop their learning. What are they struggling with positionally? Is the problem that they arnt working hard enough or that you think it’s a game understanding thing? That’s 9v9 right? What formation do you play?0Reply

Jamie Birch🔥 • Aug 8@Andy McSwan ok which formation do you play at 11 a side? If teams are fitter than them that will be an issue on a bigger pitch for sure. I think running through the game model will really help you. That structure Kevin has developed is to solve problems exactly like this 👍🏻0Reply

  1. Reframe success across the season: You aren’t going to win the league, so can y… See more4Reply

Andy McSwan • Aug 9@Kevin Middleton Thanks for the advice, I’m going to have a look at it over the next few days, we’ve got training on Monday so will give it a try this week along with the fitness training in the classroom.A lot of what you’ve suggested I’ve tried already - the mini wins / micro targets. Looking for head to head results could be something to try as we have a couple of teams I feel we can target.I’ve been trying to encourage them to take ownership of their own skills development, I’ve given them s… See more2Reply

The most important thing is to stay consistent with what you do and how you do it, as that builds the environment.Players will come and go from other teams as well. And when they want to go somewhere else and ask one of your players about the team at school, you want your players to say it is fun and they are learning all the time.Although it will probably be a parent-to-parent conversation in the above scenario, but the point still standsSounds like … See more1Reply

We are just going back to basics with them to work on technique, 1st touch, ball mastery, passing/receiving, movement etc. We’re also going try to walk them through the formation to help them understand where they should be when the ball is in a certain zone. We had tried to run them a bit more to get the fitness up, but we were getting criticised by other coaches for not giving them enough time on the ball during training… See more4Reply

Andy McSwan • Aug 17Hi guys, we’ve started using the game model for our sessions. First couple of sessions have gone well but there’s a couple of the activities that are a bit unclear for me.I’m looking at both the 7-12 and 12+ materials and the two I’m struggling to visualise are the 3rd man runs from week 1 and the trigger recognition as the diagram doesn’t seem to match the instructions. Is there any clarification/pointers you can give me?1Reply

Player A makes the “third man run” to then receive a pass from the opposite neutral who passes to Player A and the pattern repeats back to the original neutral.Does that make sense? The bottom pattern is the neutral playing into Player A, who passes it back to the neutral. The neutral then passes to Player B who then passes to a spare neutral ok … See more0Reply

Andy McSwan • Sep 7I’ve been looking at this exercise and couldn’t figure out how best to progress it, always seems like an extra player is needed between the gates without a ball to receive the pass which I’ve tried to show in the animation.Have I over complicated this or does it work something like this?@Kevin Middleton @Jamie Birch0:222Reply

Kevin Middleton⭐🔥 • Sep 8 (edited)@Andy McSwan Your diagram is a good progression, Andy. You could also play a 1-2 with the player at the gates to practice combination play. .For outside the square………….on the dribble back to the line, you could place cones and ask players to dribble through the cones either via sole rolls or just inside-outside. This would be extra dribbling and technical touch workYou could place cones just beyond the gates so players have to receive and finish in two touches. This would be finishing/pas… See more2Reply
