Sean Ancheta • Oct 17 (edited)I’d say in my squad of 16 maybe 4 of them watch football on a semi regular basis. I think it’s helpful to watch as an aide to their development. For me watching football gave me so many ideas to try on the field, whether it was a certain pass, dribble or shot.2Reply

Jamie Birch🔥 • Oct 17@Sean Ancheta its certainly helpful. But again there’s a difference between watching and consuming football. It’s good homework, so we’ve worked on compactness in defence in training this week I want you to watch a game of football and see if you spot it etc2Reply

Sean Ancheta • Oct 17@Jamie Birch Yeah this is good. I’ve taken my team to watch a local professional club before and during the game I’m making comments here and there about team shape, compactness, etc. It seems to click more when they see it live almost.2Reply

A lot play EA FC (FIFA) and Football Manager but they only see it from their point of view. But it does mean they have an understanding I didn’t at the same age when everyone was just 1-4-4-2. Not many go to live football either which is where I improved my game by watching live matches and following a specific player. A sthwy get older they are more aw… See more3Reply

Sean Ancheta • Oct 17I wish my players played FIFA at least. I grew up in Central America and most of the kids there watch football on a regular basis. In the US, it’s just now shown enough on tv.2Reply

Sean Ancheta • Oct 17They did. I have dual citizenship between US and Costa Rica. So I was supporting CR a bit more. I hope they both make it to the World Cup though. Right now both countries are struggling to get players to play abroad in better leagues. Both went through a golden generation if you will in past world cups. Waiting on the new one to rise up.2Reply

Jamie Birch🔥 • Oct 17@Sean Ancheta Honduras are top though right? I know Costa Rica from football teams in the past but I haven’t seen much of Honduras at all to be honest, who are they’re top players?1Reply

Sean Ancheta • Oct 17Right now they have about 4 or 5 players who play in the MLS. There is one who plays in La Liga. They are the ones carrying the team at the moment.2Reply

Brian Willis • Oct 18I coach a boys team and a girls team, both U12. Almost all my boys watch premier league or la liga. Only one of my girls watches pro football (my daughter). I think it’s immensely helpful because they get to see how the game is played at a high level and gives them something to emulate. I’d even argue it’s part of the reason why boys are more likely than girls to work on things like their footwork and fancy moves at home.2Reply

Jamie Birch🔥 • Oct 18@Brian Willis really good point Brian. Watching is really important in my opinion, not just as a player but as a coach as well. Check out the “how to analyse a match” course in our classroom, @Kevin Middleton takes you through how to stop just consuming football and breaking down what’s happening - it’s brilliant2Reply

Kevin Middleton⭐🔥 • Oct 18Great question, Sean. It has really made me think.I used to watch football on TV and be straight down the park to try some of the stuff I seen…… and there would be loads of my friends at the park doing exactly the same thing. These days?I think for a certain generation, football is a highlights show now. They will rarely watch full games as they (and I know I am generalising) don’t have the attention span for it. They’ll consume the video highlights instead. And if they do sit and watch a game… See more3Reply

Ross Whitehead🔥 • Oct 18Hi Sean, I would say in my group, only a couple would watch football on a regular basis. I know that I have tried (in vain) to get my son (9) to watch games with me, but he would rather play Roblox on the tablet 😠Over the weekend I was able to take him to watch Northern Ireland play Slovakia, and I pointed out a few things to him during the game (the way certain players moved, team shape, etc) and I think he took it on board. But, I think he needs to be exposed to more football so that it sinks in.3Reply
