Kevin Middleton⭐🔥 • Oct 24Hi Brian,Just a few questions to clarify the situation:Is he not challenged in a technical way or is he bored? Is he goofing around cos he is bored or that is just part of his personality? When you say middle to bottom half of the team, do you mean effort or ability (or both!)?I’ve had a similar situation where one player was saying he wasn’t challenged but he was bored … Not cos the training was boring, but because his parents were forcing him to come to football so he wasnt engaged and acted up all the time.2Reply

Brian Willis • Oct 24Its a combination of boredom and he doesn’t find it technically challenging (this is the hard part because I see him struggle all the time with the technical parts of his game). Goofing around is part of his personality, it was a problem last year. He is in the bottom half for both ability and effort. My training sessions are similar to the structure you use for Master the Opponent and I know they don’t differ drastically from what they did last year. I see flashes of an intelligent player in him, but its almost like his head and feet are operating at different speeds.2Reply

Kevin Middleton⭐🔥 • Oct 24@Brian Willis He may be confused physically and mentally do to his maturity levels in both. For example, if he’s had a growth spurt, his body may be out of sync, which is impacting his coordination.I’m torn on the response, as I know what is going to happen at 11aside (this player will be benched and then drift away from the team), but as coaches, we don’t want that.I think there is a conversation to be had with him and his mum again. Just to say that he’s a valued member of the squad, and you a… See more3Reply

Brian Willis • Oct 24@Kevin Middleton He is one of three in my squad that is going to get an extra year of 9v9 since USSF is changing age groups so they align with school year and not birth year. I think this will benefit him immensely. Thanks for the feedback!2Reply

Nicolas Andrews-Gauvain • Oct 25I had/have a player not putting in the effort/not looking interested (so a bit different from you but same principal) & I was encouraged by a more experienced coach to ask what he enjoyed about training. The response to this will help guide your response to the situation (e.g. if it’s just being with my mates playing football then it might be the “competitive” element of a team sport isn’t what he is after); if he raises something specific then you can always check with other players if they have the same issues etc.3Reply

Brian Willis • Oct 29Quick update on this. It was like a totally different kid showed up to training last night. Best player on the field by far. We had a really good talk on Wednesday and I emphasized that I want what’s best for everyone on the field and my job is to help everyone improve. Also added that I know what they’re capable of but we need to both trust each other going forward and if he puts in the same effort as his peers I think he’ll notice a big difference with how things are going.3Reply
