Christian Garcia • Sep 8I been so busy with my regular job and coaching I haven’t been able to update you guys ! This past weekend we played two games and won both of them. We should have done better since the opponent wasn’t at our level but it gave me a good insight on what the boys can do but also showed me if we can control the game against teams that don’t give us competition. Allowed me to experiment a bit so I can see others at different positions and was surprised! Overall a successful weekend3Reply

Jamie Birch🔥 • Sep 8@Christian Garcia great to hear Christian! Sometimes those games against lower level opponents can be really tough. Players switch off or assume it will be easy and get caught out!1Reply

Christian Garcia • Sep 8@Jamie Birch yeah I could tell the boys would want to do whatever they want which at times I am okay with to have fun and express themselves as a player but man we lost the balls doing too much dribbling trying to take on 3-4 players and lost sight of how we wanted to work the ball around and could have easily picked them off more but hey I took the wins and moved on1Reply

A repeat of last season’s opening game in which we were 3-0 down after 20 minutes 🤣. Ended up 3-2 so hopefully we can do a bit better this time. We’ve got the warm up nailed down (see earlier posts and support from Jamie/Kev and the community) well, apart from the GK warm up which will continue to be me making it up. Looking forward to it.2Reply

Ross Whitehead🔥 • Sep 5It’s another Saturday morning 9-a-side friendly for us this weekend. It was to be our last before the season starts, but an issue with pitches means the season is being delayed for another week. We found out our league on Monday, but apparently it might be re-jigged in the next couple of weeks, so we’ll have to wait and see who we actually get!2Reply

Jamie Birch🔥 • Sep 5@Ross Whitehead Are you trying anything new tomorrow? Hopefully you get a result mate. Are you going to train next weekend then or just have a free week?1Reply

Jamie Birch🔥 • Sep 8@Stephen Kavanagh Unluckly mate. You mentioned defensive errors in the last post, where do you think they made the errors?0Reply

Stephen Kavanagh • Sep 9Two issues: (1) distances between the back 4 too big, leaving gaps, making covering more difficult; (2) committing to tackles we aren’t going to win as we are off balance/reaching/getting turned which given (1) means offering up shots. The first two were a result of these. The 3rd we could have had someone put a boot through it, but our keeper made a great point blank save, the ball after a scramble, ended up on the edge of the box and corker of a strike put it top corner (keeper did get finger … See more1Reply

Jamie Birch🔥 • Sep 9@Stephen Kavanagh great that you can analyse the issues to this level mate. Distance is a huge factor in defending, not just horizontally but vertically as well. Sometimes a visual aid like a tactics board really helps. Like you say, the players diving into tackles becomes more of an issue because they have no cover in behind because of the distances. Maybe have some principles that we can’t commit to a tackle unless we are happy with the distance of the covering player.1Reply

Stephen Kavanagh • Sep 9@Jamie Birch I’m going to take that advice. We do say ‘defend in 3’ lanes but we still have the full backs in particular too wide. Part of it is getting them to react when the ball is moving, left and right, up and down and only going out wide when the ball is on its way out there. I know part of it is ‘getting done for pace’ so they hedge their bets and go wide to cover off the winger, but it leaves a big gap between them and the centre back.1Reply

Stephen Kavanagh • Sep 9There is onus on the defenders or players away from the ball to communicate too - we had one instance where the opposition broke down our left, took our right back out with a diagonal ball and the pace of the winger - our centre back went across to cover and the CDM went with him, and the centre back told him to cover him not to follow so more of that from more of the players.2Reply

Jamie Birch🔥 • Sep 9@Stephen Kavanagh absolutley right, communication is key. There’s always something to say in football, even if it’s just checking in and asking if they’re ok.If you go back and watch some games from Covid, when there was no crowds, the level of communication from the teams was unreal.1Reply

Stephen Kavanagh • Sep 9@Jamie Birch yes, that’s a great point we are a quiet team which is good as we get very little moaning and blaming (pretty much none) but we also get no helpful information to help a teammate out either. Something to work on there.2Reply
