Jamie Birch🔥 • Jul 25@Stephen Kavanagh ask open questions, “where do you think the space is?” Etc It really helps to check understanding. I like to ask a lot of open questions in my drive by coaching, makes them think while there’s a problem to solve1Reply

Sometimes I thinking would be helpful to have one of those “everything you didn’t learn in your MBA” style books for grassroots. Dealing with parents, pressure, motivation, commitments, lack of resources and pitches, managing up and sideways at the club and staying within the framework of development.2Reply

Jamie Birch🔥 • Jul 27@Chris Unruh I see it as education rather than a pathway to get paid etc. Most people on these courses won’t go into paid roles to be fair. I would recommend. Does Canada have UEFA C or does it have an equivalent?1Reply

Kevin Middleton⭐🔥 • Jul 27@Chris Unruh Chris, I’m not going to say this outside this community, but I’ve done coaching courses and most of the things that I learned there, I do not use in my everyday coaching life.Don’t get me wrong, when I need to do things like opposition analysis and I need to understand player physical load, the knowledge gained on those courses has been invaluable. But the on pitch structure of session delivery…. nah.3Reply

We are quite open and he remarked once how it looks like I have more fun coaching at the younger ages. I asked why he thought that (because I actually like the older ages) and he said I smiled and joked around more with them and It just looked like it. So occasionally he will just remind me to smile the way a parent does to their kid performing on stage. I’m not an angry coach at all but I think it’s easy to take things too seriously and our teams absorb our energy that we give them good or bad.3Reply

Kevin Middleton⭐🔥 • Jul 27I would be interested to hear everyone else’s thoughts on coaching licences. I have become a bit cynical about them due to my experiences, but that does not mean that everyone should be cynical about them.I tried to race through all of mine so quickly that I feel like I missed some of the learning, which probably means that I did not get the maximum from them. It’s always good to hear others’ opinions.1Reply

After speaking to some fellow coaches who had taken further coaching licenses, a common theme was how you had to follow a specific type of play which the U.S. and there was little room for flexibility, especially in the in-person format when the licensing professor was assessing sessions to pass the courses.1Reply

Kevin Middleton⭐🔥 • Jul 31@Kenneth Thomas Kenneth, this is my experience. There’s a disconnect between the coaching course and what actually happens on the grass at clubs. It’s hard for associations, because they can’t get a one-size-fits-all course to suit everyone. and in my experience, they don’t take feedback well. Therefore, I think some of us are always going to be cynical about the process. It does not mean these courses are worthless. I just think you have to go into them with realistic expectations.1Reply
