Defensive Player Analysis
Position-Specific Analysis Approach
The UEFA materials show position-specific approaches, using the example of a wing-back with specific analytical focuses: defending 1v1, intercepting, tracking and marking, defending opponents with back to goal, tucking in, overlapping runs, driving with pace, and delivering crosses.
This systematic approach applies to all defensive positions but with different emphasis based on role.
1v1 Success Rates Under Pressure
1v1 Analysis Categories (from UEFA materials)
- Won Possession: Clean tackle or interception
- Forced Back/Sideways: Prevented forward progress
- Beaten Outside: Opponent got past on outside
- Beaten Inside: Opponent got past on inside
- Other: Foul, handball, or unclear outcome
Analysis Focus Points
- Which types of attackers cause most problems?
- Are defeats happening in specific areas of the pitch?
- Is timing of tackle attempts appropriate?
- How does body positioning affect success rate?
Ball-Playing Accuracy When Pressed
Pressure Scenarios
- Immediate pressure (opponent within 3 metres)
- Approaching pressure (opponent 3-6 metres)
- No pressure (opponent 6+ metres away)
Pass Selection Analysis
- Forward vs backward pass selection
- Short vs long pass accuracy
- Decision-making speed under pressure
- Alternative options when first choice blocked
Recovery Positioning After Being Beaten
Recovery Analysis
- Speed of recovery run - How quickly they get back into position
- Angle of recovery relative to goal - Optimal positioning for defensive help
- Communication during recovery - Alerting teammates to dangerous situations
- Ability to affect subsequent play - Can they still influence the attack?
Tracking Requirements
- How often does the player get beaten?
- How quickly do they recover?
- Do they communicate their situation to teammates?
- Can they still influence the attack after being beaten?
Analysis Application
Use this framework to evaluate defensive players’ complete contribution, not just successful tackles. Focus on their decision-making under pressure, recovery ability, and overall impact on defensive stability.
