Stop Turn
Introduction to Stop Turn
The stop turn is a dynamic and effective skill used to quickly change direction while maintaining control of the ball. This move is especially useful for evading defenders and transitioning play, making it a valuable tool in various game scenarios.
Coaching Points for Stop Turn
Watch the Ball:
- Maintain focus on the ball to time the stop and turn accurately.
Non-Kicking Foot Placement:
- Position your non-kicking foot behind the ball to maintain stability during the stop.
Stopping the Ball:
- Use your kicking foot to stop the ball firmly and simultaneously “hop” past it with your standing foot.
Taking the Ball Away:
- Use the outside of your front foot to take the ball away in the new direction.
Acceleration:
- Accelerate quickly after completing the turn to exploit the space created.
Additional Considerations:
Body Positioning:
- Stay low with your knees bent to maintain balance and control during the stop turn.
Disguise:
- Use deceptive body movements or feints before executing the stop turn to mislead opponents.
Practice Drills:
- Practice the stop turn in tight spaces to develop precision and adaptability.
- Simulate match scenarios by integrating the stop turn into small-sided games or drills with defenders.
Mastering the stop turn will enhance a player’s ability to outmanoeuvre opponents and maintain control of the game’s tempo.
