Step Round Turn
Introduction to Step Round Turn
The step round turn is a versatile and deceptive skill that enables players to change direction while maintaining control of the ball. It is particularly effective for creating space and misleading defenders in tight situations.
Coaching Points for Step Round Turn
Watch the Ball:
- Maintain focus on the ball to time the turn accurately.
Non-Kicking Foot Placement:
- Position your non-kicking foot slightly behind or to the side of the ball for stability and balance.
Step Over the Ball:
- Use your kicking foot to step over or around the ball in a sweeping motion, feigning a move in the original direction.
Change Direction:
- Use the inside or outside of your stepping foot to nudge the ball into the new direction.
Acceleration:
- Accelerate away immediately after executing the turn to take advantage of the created space.
Additional Considerations:
Body Positioning:
- Keep a low centre of gravity to maintain balance and execute the turn smoothly.
Disguise:
- Use a convincing step over motion to mislead the defender, ensuring the move remains unpredictable.
Practice Drills:
- Use cones to practice step round turns in confined spaces, focusing on precision and timing.
- Simulate match scenarios with defenders to build confidence and adaptability under pressure.
Mastering the step round turn will enhance a player’s ability to retain possession, outmanoeuvre opponents, and maintain control in challenging situations.
