Dribbling Introduction
Dribbling/Fakes and moves are key components of dribbling that allow players to unbalance defenders, create space, and advance play. These techniques combine skill and creativity, making them essential for outwitting opponents and gaining a tactical advantage.
Coaching Points for Fakes and Moves
Have a Positive Attitude:
- Approach each move with confidence and determination to succeed.
Slow In, Fast Out:
- Reduce your speed as you approach the defender and then accelerate quickly after executing the move.
Try to Unbalance Your Opponent:
- Use body feints, changes of pace, and sharp movements to make defenders commit in the wrong direction.
Matthews Move:
- Use the inside of your foot to push the ball slightly, then quickly use the outside of the same foot to change direction and accelerate away.
Double Touch:
- Use the inside of one foot to push the ball across your body, then use the inside of the other foot to push it back across in the opposite direction.
Elastico (Flip-Flap):
- Use the outside of your foot to push the ball outward, then quickly use the inside of the same foot to bring it back across.
Maradona Turn (Roulette):
- Perform a 360-degree spin over the ball to shield and evade defenders.
Rabona:
- Wrap your kicking leg behind the standing leg to pass or shoot with a creative flourish.
Fake Shot:
- Pretend to shoot to make defenders commit, then dribble past them.
Scissors:
- Step over the ball with one foot, feigning a move in one direction, then take the ball away with the outside of the opposite foot.
Rainbow Flick:
- Roll the ball up your standing leg and flick it over your head to beat the defender.
Ronaldo Chop:
- Jump and chop the ball diagonally behind your standing leg to change direction sharply.
Additional Considerations:
Body Positioning:
- Keep a low centre of gravity to enhance balance and control during fakes and moves.
Practice Variety:
- Practice a range of moves to develop versatility and adaptability in different scenarios.
Practice Drills:
- Use cone-based setups or small-sided games to refine timing, execution, and decision-making under pressure.
Mastering fakes and moves will greatly enhance a player’s dribbling ability, enabling them to outplay opponents, create space, and make impactful contributions in attacking situations.
