Emergency Session Plans

A session for whichever area scored lowest on your diagnostic

Based on yesterday's diagnostic

Every coach has been there. You arrive at training knowing your team is struggling, but you're not sure what will fix it. The weekend's match exposed the weaknesses. Parents are asking questions. The pressure is building.

Yesterday you identified your team's weakest area. Long term development is still the priority, but there's nothing wrong with a short term fix while you build toward that. Below is the emergency session that targets each specific weakness.

Use the session that matches your lowest score

Pick the session below for whichever category came out lowest on yesterday's diagnostic.

Emergency Session 1: Ball Mastery Under Pressure
For teams who scored low on Technical
IF YOUR LOWEST SCORE WAS: TECHNICAL

Football tag games

Set up a grid, everyone dribbling a ball, one or two players "it" trying to knock other balls out. Rotate who's "it" every 90 seconds.

Key coaching points

  • Keep your head up: scan for space whilst keeping the ball close
  • Use both feet: change direction with either foot
  • Small touches: keep the ball close when under pressure
  • Be brave: take players on, don't avoid challenges

Why this works

Tag games force players to keep the ball under pressure whilst making quick decisions. They develop ball mastery, spatial awareness and confidence in tight spaces, exactly what the technical assessment identified as weak.

Emergency Session 2: Decision Making Under Pressure
For teams who scored low on Tactical
IF YOUR LOWEST SCORE WAS: TACTICAL

Four goal games

Mark out a square area with a small goal in each corner. Two teams, both attacking and defending all four goals at once.

Key coaching points

  • Look for the free goal: scan constantly for the least defended option
  • Use the neutrals: create overloads to break through
  • Switch play quickly: if one side is blocked, go to the other
  • Defend as a unit: cover multiple goals through positioning

Why this works

Multiple goals force quick decision making under pressure. Players must constantly scan, assess options and make smart choices about when to keep possession versus when to attack, directly addressing tactical weaknesses.

Emergency Session 3: High-Intensity Conditioning
For teams who scored low on Physical
IF YOUR LOWEST SCORE WAS: PHYSICAL

4v4+3, four goal game

Two teams of four, plus three neutral players who always play for whichever team has the ball. Four small goals, one on each side.

Intensity demands

  • Sprint to every ball: no walking, constant movement
  • Press immediately: when you lose the ball, win it back instantly
  • Use the neutrals: quick passing to maintain intensity
  • Keep your head: make good decisions when tired

Why this works

The three neutrals create constant overloads, demanding high-intensity running, quick decision making under fatigue and rapid transitions. It develops match fitness whilst improving football skills at the same time.

Emergency Session 4: Confidence Through Clinical Finishing
For teams who scored low on Mental
IF YOUR LOWEST SCORE WAS: MENTAL

Unopposed finishing progression

Start with simple finishing drills where they can't miss. Gradually add a defender, then a goalkeeper, then time pressure, always keeping the success rate high.

Mental coaching points

  • Pick your spot before you shoot: decision before technique
  • Every shot hits the target: accuracy over power
  • Celebrate every goal: build positive associations with scoring
  • Next shot goes in: short memory for misses, long memory for goals

Why this works

Starting with near-certain success builds confidence. Gradually increasing difficulty whilst maintaining a high success rate creates positive mental associations with finishing. Players leave feeling like clinical strikers.

The emergency session formula

Long term development is still the priority, but if you need a short term fix, use this four-step process (45 minutes):

1

Warm-up with purpose

Light movement with the ball (5 mins)

2

Emergency session

Target your weak area in a small-sided game (25 mins)

3

Game application

Use the weak area in a match situation (10 mins)

4

Cool down

End on success (5 mins)
